Betty White Ludden is a well-known American author, comedian, actress and a game show host. Betty White is best-known to modern-day audiences for her excellent television roles, may it be Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show or Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls. She has won many awards such as: two Viewers for Quality Television Awards, three American Comedy Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990), and seven Emmy Awards.
Born on January 17, 1922, in Oak Park, Illinois, she is the daughter of Horace Lawrence White, an electrical engineer and a traveling salesman and Tess Curtis, a homemaker. During the Great Depression, her family moved to Los Angeles, California. Since early childhood, she thought of becoming a writer, and at Horace Mann School, she wrote and played the lead in a graduation play and discovered her interest in acting.
Betty White started her television career in 1939. Her career was immediately disrupted due to the Second World War. She then, joined the American Women's Voluntary Services. In the 1940's, her appearance on radio shows such as This Is Your FBI, The Great Gildersleeve and Blondie, were remarkable. Later, she got her own radio show, called The Betty White Show. She worked with Al Jarvis on his daily, live variety show, Hollywood on Television, in Los Angeles in 1949. In 1952, after Jarvis's departure, she hosted the show and throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Betty appeared on several daytime game shows and late night talkshows. From 1961 – 1975, Betty made numerous appearances as a guest celebrity on the successful game show, Password. In 1963, she married the show's host, Allen Ludden. Subsequently, she made her appearance on the show's 3 updated versions – Million Dollar Password, Super Password and Password Plus. She was featured in various more sitcoms, and became one of the first Hollywood actresses to gain the unofficial title of "America's Sweetheart". Though she has performed in various made-for-television movies, she made an appearance on the big screen only once, which was in Otto Preminger's Advise and Consent (1962) for which she was highly acclaimed.
White is a pet enthusiast and has worked with a number of animal organizations. She is still sharp at 88, and is indeed a role model. She is being known as an outstanding performer.
