Chinese parents can do things that will seem unimaginable to Westerners because when it comes to being strict, Western moms don't even come close to Chinese mothers or the tiger moms. When it comes to parenting, there is a remarkable difference between the two as the Chinese kids are known for their excellent academic record and professional success.
In a study of American mothers and Chinese immigrant moms, it was found that Chinese moms felt the academic performance is important as it reflects successful parenting. Children will resist in the beginning, which is why Western parents give up; they will only ask their kids to do their best at school but Chinese parents will order their kids to get straight As.
There is a huge difference in the mind-sets of Western and Chinese parents. Western parents are more concerned about the self-esteem and the psyches of their children. Chinese parents aren't. For example, if a kid is not doing well at school, Chinese mom will not shy away from screaming or punishing their kids. They will work hard on their kids, maybe give them hundreds of practice tests, but will make sure their kids excel in academics.
Another difference between the two parenting styles is that the Chinese mom feel that their kids owe them everything. They think that because they spend so much time on their kids, the kids should obey them and make them proud. On the other hand, Westerners feel that the parents are responsible for kids and kids do not owe anything to them.
Chinese parents have an entirely different parenting model. They believe they know what is best for their kids and override all their kids desires. They feel they care more for their children and are willing to sacrifice a lot as compared to Westerners.
The fact is all parents want the best for their children; they just have different way of doing things for them. Western parents encourage their kids to pursue their dreams, they support their choices and respect their decisions. Chinese work on the skills and confidence of their kids so that the kids get only the best in life.
