There are many types of parenting styles and now there is a new addition- Tiger mom. The Tiger mother term is given to a stereotypical strict mother. The term was given by Amy Chua, A Yale Law School professor who has described the Chinese parenting style in her book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Moms.

Many people would raise this question that what is it that the Chinese parents do to produce such intelligent and smart kids. That is because they only expect the best from the kids. They believe that schoolwork always comes first and the child should always get perfect grades, should only be allowed to play piano or violin, no sleepovers, no videogames and should respect their parents. They focus more on the academics whereas western kids are more involved in sports and extracurricular activities.

According to Chua, kids are strong enough to handle the pressure and it is OK to yell or even punish the child on his’/her mistakes or when they get low grades. Many Chinese moms adopt authoritarian parenting style which is demanding and follows a structured code of conduct. The children are told to obey the rules and not question their parents.

Chinese parents have a high level of control on their parenting approach which results in their kids doing exceptionally well at academics and other fields. A harsh parenting approach may jeopardize a mother’s relationship with her kids. But the softies need to learn to say ‘no’ and tiger moms know that their kids understand why the parents are being strict and this helps in bringing out the best in them.
