When we spend considerable amount of our time in office, especially when we are young, we are bound to connect to the people in the office. It’s really fine and many a times works out for good when we make great friends. But when such relationships in the office begin to hit higher notes and things start getting personal rather than professional, it can turn out to be a recipe for disaster. Having an office romance can be not only detrimental to your career but can harm and hurt you in many ways. But if you are a bit rebellious and still want to go onto have an office romance, go through these points before you do.
The Constant Attention
Yes, it will feel rather a lot good when you get into a relationship with your coworker since you work so hard and hardly have any social life. When you both work together, you get to see each other a lot. But there can be a downside to this. Either of you may get distracted from work due to the constant attention or start getting jealous of other colleagues who are too cozy to your partner. Also, there will come a time where you want some ‘me time’, just to be alone and that time, you won’t be able to avoid your boyfriend. Let’s face it; there are times when a woman just needs to be alone. Not getting it can be really irritating, especially if the partner is a tad bit too attentive or insecure.
Date anyone and it will still be wrong
Let’s put this in the simplest terms, no matter who you are dating in the office, it is mostly going to turn out bad for you or your career.
Dating the Cubemate – if you are dating a man from your department and you both share common work profiles, your career will suffer when it is time to compete for that next position. If you let the other take the promotion, you may regret it if you break up down the line. If you both are too much in love and don’t want to compete, someone else will take the cake.
Dating a Subordinate – this has a lot of negative points to it than positive, hardly any positives. Some men can’t deal with the fact that their partner earns more than them. Hence, down the line in your relationship, this may create a problem. There are numerous other ones as well, you partner may start to underperform, you may be accused of favoritism and the worst will be if you have to fire your partner. Leave the break up, think about the law suit in this scenario.
Dating the Boss – it has been the classic but dating your boss is the biggest mistake you can make. Apart from the various work complications, the office can call you various dirty names if they find out and no matter how hard you work, they will always think that you slept your way up the ladder. Not to mention that you can get fired if you break up. And it can hurt you even after the break up and firing. You should know that some men talk; and if the men at higher level talk while they are playing golf with other high level of other companies, word may get around to tarnish your image and the bosses may take you for something otherwise.
Apart from all these points, there are various other things that you should worry about. That flirting at the office party may give you up and may create a problem if your company has a strict policy about office relationships. Worst case scenario would be if you both can’t control yourself and go at it in the supply room and someone catches you.
